Phil Lukes - BiographyBorn in Manchester in 1962, Phil has been in and out of various local bands, without ever really making an impact on the wider musical world. Bands such as Dutch Uncle and Non-stop Mancini (now together again, recording as the Mancinis) were well respected in Manchester but failed to make the jump to (inter)national (or any) success, having once turned down a gig in Brighton. "We were just too big for our boots", he says.
Ironically, one of Phil's overriding memories of the late 1980's is that of begging Ian to sign his band of the time, Dutch Uncle, to the BOP label, but without success. He wasted no small amount of time and money having cassettes duplicated that no-one wanted, in a vain attempt to develop some sort of profile and attract a favourable response. Ian, of course remained unmoved and consequently remains unforgiven. Phil is by inclination a bass player but enjoys programming and "looping" as well as playing guitar. He is currently enjoying the delusion that he can play glockenspiel and has to be persuaded not to add it to every track that is recorded at Freckle, Brightside's own studio. |
